As a redhead living aboard a sailboat in the relentless Australian sun, sunscreen is more than just a skincare product—it's a lifeline. Spending my days exposed to the rays, I've become a bit of a sunscreen connoisseur. My search for SPF products that are effective, reef-safe, and don't aggravate my acne-prone skin led me to try SunButter, and I’m excited to share my experience.
The SunButter Products
The SunButter sunscreen and zinc products I've tried and tested are:
First Impressions
The first thing to notice is the minimalist, eco-friendly packaging. SunButter comes in a compact tin—no plastic in sight—which is a big win for anyone trying to reduce their environmental footprint. If you’re like me and accustomed to conventional tubes, pump bottles, or zinc sticks, using sunscreen from a tin feels a bit different at first. However, it immediately makes you more mindful of your choices and the impact they have on the environment—a refreshing change in perspective.
How Long They Last
I use the SPF50 sunscreen generously on my face, shoulders, and any other sun-exposed areas. At first, I was hesitant about using it as my daily sunscreen, worried that the tin would run out too quickly. I’m used to larger pump bottles or 180ml+ tubes, so the compact tin felt like it might not keep up. To my surprise, it’s lasted just as long as my previous products, proving that a little really does go a long way!
Performance and durability
The SPF 50 formula holds up impressively during long snorkeling sessions and sweaty afternoons hauling sails. The zinc is my go-to for extra protection on my nose and cheeks—well, my whole face, really—and I love how the slight tint helps blur blemishes, almost like a natural foundation. While I made sure to reapply after swimming, I was relieved that it didn’t sting my eyes—a rare find in the sunscreen world!
I often get a sunburned bottom lip, so I was excited to give the lip zinc a try. While the lip zinc leaves a subtle beige cast, I’ve embraced the "I-mean-business" sunscreen look. By using a little less product, I could reduce the cast without compromising on protection. It’s such a relief not to have that unpleasant "sunscreen taste" lingering when you’re safeguarding your lips.
Skin Sensitivity and Care
I find that the Sunbutter didn't aggravate my skin or cause breakouts like other sunscreen products have for me. I did make sure to cleanse my skin twice in the evenings to remove all the zinc as it can be quite difficult to remove. Even after hours in the sun, my skin didn't feel dry or damanged. I have also been using the SunButter Facial Oil (an oil-based hydrating serum) and After Sun Milk (a lightweight cooling moisturiser) but I will review those in more detail after I have been using them more regularly!
What Could Be Better?
If I had one critique, there are some downfalls to this packaging. The tin gets HOT, and compared to zinc 'sticks' it does mean that you have to get your hands dirty. But for the trade-off of reef safety and skin health, it’s a compromise I’m happy to make.
Final Thoughts
SunButter Sunscreen and Zinc have become staples on my sailboat. They protect my skin from the elements without compromising my commitment to the ocean. While it might not suit everyone—especially those looking for a completely invisible finish—its reef-safe formula, durability, and nourishing ingredients make it a standout for sailors, snorkelers, and sunseekers alike.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. For me, it’s a sunscreen with a conscience—and my seal of approval.
